Description:

This rifle was previously part of the Wallace Gusler collection and has a "Gusler 9" collection mark on the inside of the trigger guard. The rifle was previously attributed to Abraham Honaker of Virginia. The only components that are not iron based are the maple stock, wooden ramrod, and brass lock screw washer. Other iron mounted Honaker guns from the 1830s are known. One interesting aspect of the rifle is that the ramrod thimbles gradually get longer as you move towards the muzzle, and the forend cap length appears to be based on the same rate of increase which has been theorized to be based upon the Golden Rectangle. The rifle has standard "Kentucky" style blade and notch sights, a drum style bolster and percussion nipple at breech, and is also equipped with a "JOSEPH GOLCHER" lock that has scrollwork patterns and adjustable double set triggers. The patch box has a pierced finial but is not engraved, and the stock has some line accents on the forend but no extensive carving.

Rating Definition:

Fair. The metal surfaces display primarily deep, dark brown patina as well as a few lighter areas and heavy flash pitting at the breech. The stock is fair and has chipping along the barrel channel, a crack at the front wedge, crack and worn through spot at the ramrod entry pipe, some cracking and material absent around the lock, tension cracks at the lock screw on the left flat, hairline crack above the rear wedge on the right, evidence of a repair at the middle wedge, repair and chip at the toe, and attractive natural patina throughout. The lock and set triggers function very well.
