Description:

This rifle is stamped "LECHLER PHILA" on the lock and "LECHLER/PHILA" on the barrel. Both Henry Lechler and his son John are known to have manufactured rifles in Philadelphia. John was active later than his father and was still producing rifles into the mid-1840s. This rifle is almost certainly his work given the later style design and similarities to known examples signed "J A LECHLER." Most elaborately decorated, German silver or silver mounted rifles were manufactured between the 1830s and the beginning of the Civil War and were likely used by gentlemen for sport if used at all. This example has blade and notch sights, double set triggers, and floral engraving on the back action lock, breech, and the extensive German silver furniture including a distinctive fox inlay on the cheek rest. The barrel is secured by two wedges. There is a "Teller 9" collection mark inside the trigger guard.

Rating Definition:

Very good. The barrel and lock have gray and brown patina and some mild pitting. The German silver is mostly bright and has slight aging. The stock is also very good and has crisp checkering at the wrist, a tension crack at the front lock screw, slight chips at the edges of the lock inlet, and a very faint crack below the lock extending to the front trigger. The lock and triggers function fine, and the markings and engraving patterns are crisp throughout.
