Description:

This rifle has an engraved "J. Golcher" lock, standard Kentucky style blade and notch sights, a full length walnut stock with checkering at the wrist, and a pair of double set triggers. Aside from the lock, wedges, barrel, and trigger group, the fittings are all German silver. The patch box has five piercings and attractive floral scroll engraving that includes a bird on the door. The left side of the butt has an engraved oval plate on the cheekpiece and a Pennsylvania-Dutch/German folk art style reposed deer inlay at the rear. German silver ornamentation gained popularity after the War of 1812 and was especially popular on half stock sporting rifles and target rifles by mid-century. This rifle has similarities to many built in Western Pennsylvania and Ohio along the National Road in the 1830s.

Rating Definition:

Good as reconverted to flintlock configuration. The barrel and lock are mostly brown with some light pitting and oxidation. The German silver components have a lightly aged patina. The patch box door has slightly pressed upwards and has bright verdigris inside. The partially restored stock is good with some wood fill on belly, and has crisp checkering, a worn through section between the two fluer-de-lis plates on the bottom of the forend, some cracking on the edge of the forend on the left, some additional minor cracking and chips, and some flash wear at the breech. The lock and set triggers function fine.
