Description:

The barrel of this early 19th century flintlock rifle is unmarked, but the lock is stamped "DREPPERT." John Sr. and Jr. are generally believed to be the one whose locks were widely used by other Lancaster makers although other members of the family were also listed as gunsmiths. John Sr. was a lock or gunmaker from 1810 until his death in 1864. The lock has a floral bloom on the cock ahead of the screw that matches other Dreppert locks. The patch box finial design is very similar to the Jacob Hoak Lancaster rifles including the examples in "Behold, The Longrifle" by Chandler and Whisker and the overall four piece patch box design matches a rifle signed by Melchoir Fordney. Many Fordney rifles have Dreppert marked locks. He was active until he was murdered by a fanatic neighbor in 1846 who thought the world was at its end during an incident involving the man seizing a gun and killing a "demon horse" with by shooting it with silver coins after Fordney refused to kill it himself. Fordney and his wife confronted the man and requested he hand over his weapons. He gave the rifle to Fordney's common law wife and then murdered the pair with an axe in their own home and seriously injured one of their daughters. He was eventually tried and hanged. This rifle has blade and notch sights, a plain trigger, wedge fastened barrel, wear plate on the forend, simple engraving on the side plate, a silver hunter's star with punch dot border pinned on the cheekpiece, and incised scrollwork on the left side of the butt and a simple scroll design on either side of the comb. The patch box door release button is bone and protrudes from the toe plate.

Rating Definition:

Fair as reconverted to flintlock configuration. The lock and barrel have an artificial dark brown patina and light oxidation. The lock is currently not functional, and the barrel has extensive mild pitting. The brass components have varying aged patinas throughout and the patch box components are brighter than most other components. The patch box door will not open, and the side plates may be replacements. The stock has been repaired around the lock, possibly as part of a conversion, and has fairly crisp carving, some minor cracks and chips at the edges, and dark finish with some flame figure showing through.
