Description:

A tag on this rifle is marked with "George Edgington/Brooke Co. W Va." George Edgington Sr. (1706/07-1791) came to America as a stowaway after receiving a whipping in Britain and arrived in the colonies at the age of just 15. He settled in Virginia and fought during the French & Indian War. Some sources indicate he was taken captive by Native Americans during the war and held for three years before finally returning home to his wife who had remarried thinking he had died. She returned to him. Their six sons all fought during the Revolution including George Jr. (1746-1816). His son Thomas was a ranger during the Revolutionary War and was also taken captive in 1781 and sold to the British at Detroit before being released. The family's home in West Virginia was initially fortified but then abandoned for the safety of Pennsylvania. The rifle has no visible markings and only light border designs on the patch box and side plate. Though the side plate has three screws, the lock is only secured by one. The rifle has attributes similar to other rifles originating in Virginia and West Virginia including Brooke County. One member of the Edgington family (listed as D.) is known to have been the maker of a "beautiful Kentucky rifle" per "American Gunmakers" by Gluckman and Satterlee.

Rating Definition:

Fine overall as reconverted to flintlock configuration. The barrel and lock have an applied artificial dark brown finish over extensive moderate pitting. The brass has an aged patina. The stock has attractive flame figure, a glossy refreshed finish, chips and slivers absent from the forend and around the lock, scattered minor marks, and a small repair next to the trigger. The lock functions very well.
