Description:

This rifle is signed "A Daniels" on the top of the barrel and "A D" on the lock. Adam Daniels of Pennsylvania was active in Lancaster in the 1820s to 1840s per Sellers' "American Gunsmiths." His rifles are high quality examples of post-"Golden Age" designs. They still retain some of the ornate elements and overall attractive designs of the Golden Age but notably lack carving and have more simplistic engraving. The side plate is inscribed "No. 219" indicating the rifle would have been manufactured in the 1830s given that rifle No. 232 in lot [CFO84-68] is dated "1837" on the top of the buttplate. The overall design matches other known or attributed Daniels rifles especially in the German silver inlays and patch box finial designs. It has a dovetailed German silver blade front sight, notch rear sight, double set triggers, and a full length maple stock with Roman nose butt profile and brass furniture.

Rating Definition:

Fair. The iron components mostly display a mix of gray and brown patina. There is heavy flash pitting at the breech. The brass has a smooth aged patina. The stock has been restored and displays beautiful flame figure. The breaks at the toe and wrist and some minor cracks have been repaired. The lock and triggers function fine, and the signatures and engraving patterns are crisp.
