Description:

This rifle is signed "Samuel +" followed by what appears to read "Valley" or "Dalley." The patch box finial is a near match to the Adam Daniels Lancaster rifles in lots [CFO84-68 and CFO85-68] and is also very similar to some Berks Country rifles by Wolfgang Haga and Stofel Smith. The overall design suggests the rifle originated in the 1830s or 1840s just after the end of the "Golden Age." It has blade and notch sights, a Roman nose profile butt on the full length stock, German silver inlays, brass furniture including a lightly engraved patch box with six piercings in the side panels, double set triggers, and a bird engraved lock.

Rating Definition:

Good. The iron fittings have dark brown patina, oxidation, and pitting. The brass and German silver display well aged patinas. The stock is also good and has a cracks near the forend tip, a missing thumb plate, chipping ahead of the lock, part of one of the tang inlays absent, and various scratches and dings. The hammer is jammed at full cock.
