Description:

Jehial Ogden of Oswego, Tioga County, New York, was active around the 1830s and 1840s. His younger brothers Walter & Charles Ogden are known to have produced half-stock target and sporting rifles during and after the Civil War. The barrel has a brass blade front sight in the front dovetail and a fixed notch rear sight in the rear dovetail and is stamped "J OGDEN OWEGO NEW YORK [sic]" near the breech on top. The barrel is not rifled but has standard Kentucky rifle style sights; these guns are sometimes referred to as "smooth rifles" (an obvious oxymoron), buck & ball guns, or simply, and most accurately, sighted smoothbores. The stock has a cheekpiece on the left and is fitted with brass furniture including the attractively engraved patch box. The engraved lock is marked "A. W. SPIES/WARRANTED."

Rating Definition:

Fine. The barrel and lock are mostly an even dark brown and there is flash pitting concentrated around the nipple at the breech. The barrel marking is legible, but the lock markings are mostly faint. The brass displays an attractive aged patina and has crisp engraving. The refinished stock is fine and has various scrapes and dings, minor hairline cracking at the lock bolt and front of the forend, and pleasant dark and cherry tones. The lock functions fine.
