Description:

This rifle is stamped with "A. R. BYRKIT/FAIRFIELD/IOWA" on the top of the barrel between the breech and rear sight. A. R. Byrkit advertised in the Fairfield "Weekly Journal" at least as late as June of 1884 and listed himself as a gunsmith and dealer in typewriters. It has blade and notch sights, double set triggers, a pewter forend cap, brass furniture, and a walnut stock with "perch belly" profile.

Rating Definition:

Good. The barrel and lock have a mottled gray-brown patina, and the brass and pewter have aged patina. The ramrod tubes have been repaired, and it appears the barrel was shortened in period. The stock is fine and has a hole in the butt and some cracks, including one in the wrist, but is stable. The lock and double set triggers function fine.
