Description:

Although there are no visible maker markings, the quality of this Victoria Era Wheellock rifle displays the craftsmanship of a master artisan. From the metal work to the stock work, no detail was left to chance. The barrel is nearly covered in a beautiful chiseled floral motif that depicts vines, leaves and blossoms. It is equipped with a bead front sight and a notch rear sight. The barrel has a cannon type muzzle that gauges at approximately .62 caliber. The lock plate is much earlier production and features lightly engraved floral inspired sculpted components. The cock has an additional engraving of an arrow pointed skyward, shooting out a patch of tall grasses. The arrow motif is repeated on the pan cover. The wheel has simple and fine zig zag engraved patterns. The trigger guard is grooved for three fingers. The full length hardwood stock is completely covered in panels. The large panels cover all flat and contoured surfaces, leaving no wood exposed. A true work of high quality craftsmanship. Large metal engraved inlays are found on the sides of the forearm, patch box, area behind the breech of the barrel, left side flat and left side of the buttstock. The forearm and patch box inlays are of the same serpent-like mythical creature with a bird's head. The three inlays at the breech of the barrel are in a shape that recalls star or sun bursts. The inlay on the stock flat depicts a serpent-like mythical creature with a horse's head. The inlays on the buttstock depicts a knight on horse back and infantry foot solider engaging each other in battle. The buttstock inlays are the most detailed engraved of all of the inlays.

Rating Definition:

Very good as assembled in the Victorian era using a mixture of crafted and earlier made components. The rifle has a smooth gray patina. A single forearm inlay is missing on the left side of forend. The stock panels are very good showing some scattered minor cracks, a couple areas of typical age cracking along the grain and a deep gouge near the trigger guard. A narrow panel is missing from the underside of the buttstock, a minor chip is missing near a screw and a filled repair is near the lock plate. The panels have an attractive color. A very impressive smooth bore wheellock rifle with richly chiseled barrel and highly attractive full length stock panels. A very attractive decorative example of a Wheelock longarm!
