Description:

Manufactured by Anton Vinzent Lebeda of Prague circa 1850, with fine wire-twist steel round side by side barrels finished in light grey and inlaid in gold in semi-high relief "A.V. Lebeda v Praze" on the solid rib towards the breech. The front bead sight is the center of a gold inlaid star burst, and a thin gold inlaid band is at the muzzles. The breech of the barrels and rib are adorned with gold engraved scrollwork. The barrels have a set of ramrod pipes that feature the rich Damascus pattern found on the barrels. The bolsters have pierced platinum blow-out plugs. Between the bolsters is a high relief boar head surrounded by gold accents. The breech tang has gold inlaid scroll engraving with high relief bird of prey over a silver coat-of-arms. The scroll engraved and gold inlaid lock plates are inscribed "A.V. LEBEDA" (right) and "A PRAGUE" (left) under the hammers. Each lock plate has high relief chiseled and chased hunting scenes depicting hounds and game birds. The left plate shows a dog retrieving a pheasant. The right plate shows two dogs stalking game birds. The square front trigger guard is embellished en suite with additional high relief hunted game (rabbit and birds) on the underside and relief squirrel eating a nut on the finial, which also has scrollwork in gold. The trigger guard has a beautifully sculpted horn extension and has "N=2530" in gold. Equipped with double triggers. The varnished walnut half stock has a floral carving and finely checkered panels on the forend and wrist. There is a wide cheekpiece with finely carved scrolling flourish on the left side of the buttstock. The finely scroll engraved buttplate has an extended tang featuring gold inlaid scroll and deep relief sculpted fox caught in a snare. The forend cap/ramrod tail pipe features relief sculpted floral and fox head motifs with additional gold and engraved scrollwork. The gold inlaid single barrel wedge has silver oval escutcheons. Sling swivels are mounted on the underside of the buttstock and rear ramrod pipe. Anton Vinzent Lebeda of Prague became a master gunmaker in 1822. In 1829, he received a silver medal at the Bohemian Industrial Exhibition held in Prague. By 1852, he was the gunmaker to the Imperial Court and made firearms for the Emperor Franz Josef I. Based on the crests found on this shotgun, the gun was made for Ludwig Wilhelm August, Graf von Langenstein und Gondelsheim (1820-1872), one of three illegitimate children of Grand Duke Ludwig I of Baden by his mistress Katharina Werner.

Rating Definition:

Very fine overall, with light dent at muzzle face and chip at edge of barrel wedge, some expected light marks and minor aged patina throughout. The wood has some scattered minor handling marks. Mechanically excellent. Provenance: Robert M. Lee Collection.
