Description:

This is a unique example of a superposed load double barrel percussion shotgun. A superposed load is a method used on muzzle loading firearms to fire multiple shots from a single barrel without reloading. This example has two hammers for each barrel. The shotgun is designed to be loaded with two complete charges of ball and power in each barrel. Then the hammers are cocked. The first pull of the rear trigger drops the front hammer on the left side and a second pull of the rear trigger drops the rear hammer on the left side. The right side hammers operate in the same manner but use the front trigger. Using a tightly patched round ball creates a gas seal between the two loads theoretically preventing accidental double ignition. The barrels have a brown Damascus finish and a solid rib with the maker's marking in gold (which appears to be "Thory Aro A Amiens"?). The remaining metal surfaces are in the white and feature a floral scroll engraving. The nicely figured half stock features checkering on the wrist, a single barrel wedge and a shotgun buttplate marked "No. 3" and has scroll engraving on the tang. Length of pull is 14 3/4 inches. Comes with a horn tipped wooden ramrod.

Rating Definition:

Very good as refinished. The barrels retain most of the brown Damascus showing some minor muzzle wear. The remaining metal surfaces have a bright appearance. The revarnished stock is also very good with a wood filled repair near the checkering and a few scattered minor handling marks. Mechanically fine.
