Description:

These beautiful matching pair of fine percussion pistols were manufactured by Heinrich Barella, a German Master Gunmaker. Heinrich Barella was born in Soest, Germany in 1819. He was a Royal High Power Rifle Master and Adviser Commissioner in 1865. After 1871 his title was Imperial Royal High Rifle Master and he made weapons for the Royal Court. He died in Berlin, Germany in 1893. These pistols feature fluted octagon 41 caliber barrels are blue with a gold inlaid wire band around the breech end, gold inlaid "H. BARELLA KOENIGL. HOF=BUCHSENMACHER IN BERLIN" on the top flat and a dovetailed blade front sight. The remaining metal parts are casehardened. The barrel plug, decorative barrel tang, hammer, lock, side plate, trigger guard, decorative lower tang, butt cap, and wedge head are beautifully decorated with floral leaf vine engraving. In addition, there is a gold inlaid accent on the barrel tang, hammer, lower tang, and butt cap. The barrel tang also has a gold inlaid "1" (gun A) and "2" (gun B) with a gold inlaid oval around it. The rear of the lock has a gold inlaid stand of flags and there is a gold inlaid scroll design with gold inlaid wire bordering and accents. The trigger guard has a gold inlaid Mediterranean spearman. There is a niter blue rear sight on the barrel tang which is adjustable for elevation by use of an adjusting key. This is a very rare feature found on dueling pistols. Adjustable trigger and mounted on a solid ebony half stock with a fluted grip area and nicely carved scroll designs on the wrist and forend. The wedge escutcheons are engraved with a geometric border. The pair is complete in a birds eye maple case with red velvet lining. The inside of the lid has the gold embossed marking "H. BARELLA/Kodigl Hof-Buchsenmacher/BERLIN". In the case is a small lacquered powder flask, rear sight key, nipple wrench, and screwdriver with ebony handles, walnut cleaning rod, powder measurer, bright steel single cavity bullet mold, walnut bullet seater, small oiler and two spare percussion nipples.

Rating Definition:

Excellent. The barrel retains 95% original bright blue finish with some scattered minor oxidation. The remaining metal surfaces have a smooth dove gray patina. 99% of the gold inlay remains. The stock is also excellent with sharp flat edges and carving, showing only a few very minor dings and handling marks. The engraving is sharp. The action is excellent. The case is very fine with some minor cracking on the right side and a few minor dings and dents. The lining has faded somewhat, there are a couple of small tears and some minor contact wear. All of the accessories are very good or better.
