Description:

One of the final weapons designed and developed by the Nazis in World War II, the VG1 was aptly named the "people's rifle". This was a last-ditch small arms rifle produced by an industrial complex that had been bombed into submission by the allied strategic bombers. In essence, the VG1 is a successor of the Mauser 98k, stripped to the bone that uses as many simplified parts and machining operations as possible with the intent of producing a workable bolt action rifle. This example is a very early model that is considered as the prototype of the VG1 rifles. The receiver still retains its original rough cast outer metal surface that has been filed on the left side to form a small flat marking panel that is hand scribed "Yluloe weich geschossen" which loosely translates into limited firing rifle; i.e., it was made as a working model but not intended to be extensively fired. It has the standard early round profiled barrel without any sights. It is fitted with a very early style all cast bolt body that has been lathe turned on the outside and a welded on bolt handle. The front of the bolt handle has been slotted for a flat spring that acts as the firing pin spring. The bolt is roughly machined for the extractor, and it has the standard, stamped flat firing pin. It is fitted with the standard stamped trigger/trigger guard, and it comes with an original K43 magazine. It is fitted with a smooth pistol grip stock with a fixed wire sling loop and a thin sheet metal buttplate.

Rating Definition:

Very good with 85% of the late war finish still remaining overall with the receiver having an all browned out finish showing heavy casting marks that resemble a meteorite in appearance. The stock is in very good condition with its rough turned outside showing numerous handling marks and light gouges in the wood on the sides. Mechanically fine. An interesting late war rifle.
