Description:

This is an extraordinarily rare example of an original early production DWM Model 1902 Prototype Luger semi-automatic pistol with the desirable intertwined "GL" toggle markings. The serial number of this rare Luger "100035 B" is not listed in any of the known Luger reference books that we have indicating this is a truly historic and fascinating example from the Robert Bretherton Collection. All of these early prototype Lugers were intended to be some type of engineering test design or as a presentation Luger. These were all produced in the 1902 time frame, and no two are alike. This rare example has two unique features: first it has the noted "reverse toggle" which is exactly the opposite of a standard toggle configuration in that the front toggle portion incorporates the dished cocking knobs on the sides, with the rear portion having the nose of the hinge that extends into the front toggle. This was designed to evaluate early timing and frame strength experiments when DWM was changing from the 7.65 Luger to 9 mm Luger cartridges. The chamber has the correct early "obturation" ring inside the chamber for the new 9 m/m cartridge. Second, it has a very unusual length 5 7/8 inch, slightly heavier barrel, chambered in 9 mm Luger cartridge. It still has the correct old style frame with the wide trigger guard, narrow trigger and flat main spring, it retains the dished toggles with the toggle lock on the side with the early recessed breechblock, and flat extractor spring. It is correctly numbered "10035" on the front of the frame and the underside of the barrel, with the recoil lug, side plate, the back side of each grip, the underside of the breechblock, rear toggle and grip safety all numbered "35". The trigger and takedown lever are both unnumbered. Also the rear toggle is also correctly marked with the intertwined "GL" marking as noted above. The front inside frame cutout is correctly stamped with the small ordnance bomb type proof along with the small, intertwined four circle proof in front of the recoil lug.

Rating Definition:

Excellent with 95% plus of the original blued finish overall with only minor edge and high spot wear overall. The smaller parts retain 40% of their original straw colors overall, mostly in the protected areas. The grips are in very fine condition with nice, sharp, distinct checkering overall with a few minor nicks in the grip panels. Mechanically excellent. An excellent example of an extremely rare and historically significant early DWM prototype, long barreled, reversed toggle German Luger pistol.
