This is a rare example of a Walther "Pre-Model PP" prototype semi-automatic pistol. This exact pistol is actually discussed and pictured on pages 125-128 of the excellent book Walther Volume III 1908-1980 by James Rankin. There are only 2-3 of these early pre-model PP pistols ever produced or even know in the world today. This pistol was probably produced circa 1927 during the early development stages as standard production for this model began in 1928. This wonderful pistol has all the early features originally manufactured by Walther with many of them being changed/dropped in the later models to make the pistol a better design and much easier to produce. This example has the following features: 1) short solid hammer with the additional button on top of the spur to help cock the pistol, 2) lengthened slide that almost encloses the hammer, 3) deep milled sighting groove in the top of the slide, with a separate rear sight, 4) a manual safety lever on the left side and 5) the early, slightly angled magazine release button. It also has the short "two-line" factory address with the very small lettering that reads: "Waffenfabrik Walther,Zella-Mehlis (Thur)/Walther's Patent Cal 7.65m/m" followed by the WALTHER inside the traditional Banner. The right side of the frame, slide and chamber area all have a single "Crown/N" commercial proof, with the serial number "7500003" stamped directly behind the trigger pin. It is fitted with a early set of checkered walnut grips. It comes complete with an equally rare early, first pattern magazine that has the open follower (no front support area) with the solid (non-removable) magazine base plate that is held in place by two pins that run through the side of the magazine into the base plate.

Very fine with 85% plus of the slightly faded blue finish intact overall with wear on the edges and high spots with some light brown patina on the grip straps. The grips are also in very fine condition with nice distinct visible checkering on both sides. This is an extremely rare Walther Pre-Model PP prototype semi-automatic pistol.
