Description:

In 1863-1865, approximately 50,000 Spencer carbines were manufactured and then widely used by the Union cavalry. They were widely popular and arguably among the most advanced firearms of the conflict. After the war, Spencers continued to be used until the widespread adoption of the Springfield trapdoors, and many of these repeaters found their way into Indian hands and were used against some of the same U.S. cavalrymen who previously used them, including George Armstrong Custer and his men during the Battle of Little Bighorn. Others were carried by Indian scouts allied with the U.S. This example has the standard Civil War model features including government inspection markings and a pair of cartouches on the left side of the stock.

Rating Definition:

Very good plus. The carbine has an attractive mottled blend of gray and brown patina throughout and some small patches of minor pitting. The fine forearm and buttstock has faint cartouches, some edge wear, scrapes, small chips, and small dents from use. The action functions fine. The markings are all clearly legible.
