Description:

Manufactured at the Pieper plant in Belgium during the very early period of WWI. On page 247 of "Central Powers Pistols" Jan C. Still lists six pistols ranging from 15109-16757 as being produced under German occupation. This particular pistol, though not listed, certainly does fit the description and specifics provided and is within this range. The serial number "15128" is on the underside of the barrel and inside of the right side plate. The right side of the barrel, upper receiver, and frame are stamped with a small diamond with an apple in the center. It is correctly absent of any Belgian commercial proofs. Fixed blade and notch sights, rust blue finish on the major components, straw colored trigger, hammer, safety, and small parts, lanyard loop on the butt, and checkered grips. The large frame Bayard pistol in 9mm is listed in an August 8 ,1917 list of pistols and revolvers available for private purchase by German officers at a cost of 48 Marks (see page 147 of "Central Powers Pistols.) Includes a Danish holster for the Bergmann-Bayard pistol with a shoulder strap, steel end cap, and Danish "crown/22" acceptance mark on the front of the flap.

Rating Definition:

Very fine. 95% arsenal refurbished blue finish remains with some light edge and high point wear, handling marks, and some small surface scratches. The hammer displays 75% of the faded straw finish with the other small parts having aged to a mostly silver patina with traces of straw coloration. The grips are fine with well defined checkering, some small bruises and pressure indentations, and handling marks. Mechanically excellent. The holster is very good with scuffs and handling marks throughout, flexible leather, age cracking mostly on the straps, and verdigris at the metal fittings. This is one of the rarest WWI German military pistols, sure to enhance even an advanced collection.
