Description:

Originally produced in a deep, near black paint job with the red/white/black German tricolor shield decal on the right side and an early pattern off-white/black Luftwaffe eagle decal on the left, the helmet has been sprayed with khaki brown paint showing a pink tint, with proper masking applied to preserve the decals. Unlike the Heer, where camo jobs were typically performed by the average trooper using whatever was nearby, Luftwaffe camouflage was commonly executed at the unit level, resulting in notable consistency in style and color. The pink tinted khaki is traditionally associated with Luftwaffe units operating in and around Tunisia, where it was readily available from stocks intended for vehicle and armor camouflage. The interior shows the original paint, with "ET 66" and "4090" stamped inside the brim, a leather chinstrap with a faded "1938" maker's mark at the end, and leather webbing hand-signed "GFR.FREIBERGER". Gefreiter (Private First Class) Freiberger has not been positively identified. Formerly of the George Petersen Collection.

Rating Definition:

Very good overall. The exterior shows significant wear, especially on top of the crown, exposing both the original factory paint and the underlying steel, which has taken on a brown patina. Around 80-90% of the decals are visible, with some mild scuffing. The interior shows some mild wear, with the chinstrap showing some cracks and the leather as a whole showing wear and staining appropriate to field use.
