Description:

A refinement of the 1935 pattern stahlhelm, the 1940 design eliminated the grommets from the vents. This particular example was factory finished in a very dark blue paint and was later oversprayed in a camouflage pattern, first with a khaki brown over the entire surface (in the style of helmets recovered from the African Theater) and then with a solid green accented with splotches of an orange-brown and flecking of tan (more in line with examples recovered from the Normandy beachheads and Northern France). The interior retains the original factory blue, with "T770" stamped in the rear of the skirt and a set of brown leather webbing.

Rating Definition:

Very good. The exterior shows around 85% of the camouflage, with some rubbing to reveal the underlying layers and the base steel, particularly on the crown, and the left rear quarter of the helmet shows a dent. The webbing shows wear and sweat staining, with some cracks and tears. No chinstrap is included. While the exact history of the helmet is lost, the staining of the webbing and the dent suggest an actively field worn helmet, and units of the Luftwaffe (particularly the Division Hermann Goering and elements of the Fallschirmjaegers) are known to have been active in both Africa and France.
