Description:

Measuring 33 3/8 inches overall, this sword is equipped with a 28 inch curved quillback blade, etched with patriotic and naval motifs, the Staff of Hermes on the right, "United States Navy" on the left and oak leaf design, with the Springfield address on the right side near the guard. The hilt is gilt brass, with a pair of spring-hinged counterguards, acorn shaped quillions, sculpted "screaming eagle" pommel, and a ribbed and carved antique ivory grip. With a brown leather sheath with engraved gilt brass fittings and a raised Ames scroll on the reverse of the throat.

Rating Definition:

Very good. The blade shows some mild spotting concentrated towards the tip, along with a small amount of pitting in the same area, with a fine bright appearance overall and strong etching. The hilt and scabbard fittings show over 80% of the original gilt finish, with some high edge wear and handling marks, and the grip shows some age cracks, a mended chip near the pommel, and fine aged color. The scabbard is fair, showing tears and scuffs.
