Manufactured from gray wool with a black mohair headband, patent leather visor and orange/brown cloth inner lining. The crown and band are trimmed in golden yellow, traditionally reserved for aviation personnel and paratroopers, with an alloy eagle and cockade on the front, a leather chinstrap and a leather sweatband. The interior bears the Carl Halfar maker's mark, size "58" and date "1939" under the sweat diamond, with markings for Luftwaffe Fallschirmjager Regiment 1, Stab II, inside the sweatband. A component of the First Fallschirmjaeger Division, the 1st Regiment participated in the invasions of Denmark, Crete, and the Soviet Union and the defense of Italy. In February of 1944, the First Fallschirmjaeger Division was sent to defend Monte Cassino against the Allies advance to Rome. During the battle the division sustained heavy losses and stopped the Allied advance until May 1944.
