Description:

This uniform is configured for a veteran Heer Panzer officer, specifically a Hauptmann (Captain) who participated in the Siege of Crimea. The tunic is the signature Panzer double breasted "wrap" in black twill construction, and while designed with practical use in mind (dark black fabric to hide oil stains and narrow cut sleeves and a short waist for safety around moving machinery) its appearance makes it one of the most distinctive uniform items of World War II. Both the collar tabs and the shoulder boards are trimmed with pink, with the collar tabs showing a set of bright metal jawless totenkopf skulls on a black twill backing, and a pair of Hauptmann's shoulder boards with pink backings and textured green painted buttons to reduce glare. The right breast bears the gray and black party eagle patch in line with a single row of black plastic buttons, and the left breast features a set of four ribbons over a 1st Class Iron Cross (screwback style) and the Panzer Assault Badge. (All awards are original to jacket as brought back by the vet) From left to right, the ribbons represent the 2nd Class Iron Cross, Eastern Front Medal, Long Service Award (4 Years), and the Sudetenland Medal. The brass-colored Crimea Shield is positioned on the left arm just below the shoulder. The interior front is lined with gray twill fabric, with the left breast marked "DEKAWE Ffm" (associated with a branch of the Kaufhaus des Westens department store, part of the formerly Jewish-owned Herties chain that was forced to sell out due to anti-semetic financial pressure) associated with the over the size markings and "F.41", indicating issue from a Frankfurt materiel depot in 1941, properly timed for issue to a Panzer officer eastbound towards Crimea. Size Markings: "43 100/60 64". The shirt, rarely seen on the American market, is of dark gray twill construction, with a slightly lighter gray twill collar baring a faint number stamp, and a set of brown pressed fiber buttons. The trousers are black wool construction with gray twill inner pockets and waist lining, very close in color to the tunic lining, with a black canvas integral belt, black plastic buttons, and tapered cuffs with white twill adjustment cords. The interior of the waist is ink stamped "Knagge & Peitz, Munchen", with no visible size markings. The shirt in particular is formerly of the George Petersen Collection of Third Reich Artifacts.

Rating Definition:

Very good overall. Generally the items show light staining from wear, particularly on the inner lining, with the exterior of the shoulder board braiding losing its shine a bit and some minor losses of the waffenfarbe trim. The rank pips have been driven through the backing of the shoulder boards; though not documented, it would suggest that the uniform was originally issued to a Panzer Lieutenant who upgraded his own boards as he advanced up the ranks.
