Description:

Information provided by a previous owner attributes the uniform set to a Captain B.T. Hundley of the 41st Armored Infantry Regiment, a component of the 2nd Armored Division. One of the most prominent armored units in American history, the 2nd was formed in 1940 and trained under then-Colonel George S. Patton Jr., who would later lead the Division in the field as a General. Heading across the Atlantic, the 2nd participated in the African amphibious landing of Operation Torch, and land on Sicily for Operation Huskey. Landing on Omaha Beach on D-Day+3, the 2nd participated in the liberation of France and Belgium, helped repel the German Ardennes Offensive, and holds the distinction of being the first Division to reach the Elbe River, as well as the first American unit to arrive at Berlin. During the Cold War the unit would be effectively split, with the majority of the Division headquartered at Fort Hood and an element designated 2nd Armored Division (Forward) and stationed in West Germany; in the event of World War III, 2nd (Forward) would either be responsible for holding landing areas for additional American forces or get rushed straight to the East/West German border, depending on circumstances. The 2nd's final combat action would be during the Gulf War, participating in the ground invasion of Iraq. 1) A.G. Spaulding & Bros. Tanker Helmet, size 7 1/2, green plastic and brown leather construction. 2) U.S. M1 Helmet, later pattern shell (swivel bale, rear trim seam) with a textured green/brown paint finish, and a green painted fiberglass liner with green canvas webbing and leather chinstrap. 3) Fine medal grouping, including the Silver Star, Bronze Star, Purple Heart (w/ribbon bar, lapel pin and case), World War II Victory Medal, Europe-Africa-Middle East Ribbon (with four stars) and silver finished Major maple leaf. 4) Dress Jacket, bearing a maker's label from Kahn Tailoring of Indianapolis, outfitted with gilt brass buttons, crossed rifle and "U.S." lapel pins, the 2nd Armored insignia on the left shoulder over 3 service bars, a set of embroidered silver bullion Captain bars along with enamel 41st Infantry insignias on the shoulders, Infantry Blue Cord on the left shoulder, and an embroidered Combat Infantry Badge over a set of stitched-on ribbons for the Silver Star, Bronze Star, Purple Heart (with one leaf) and the Europe-Africa-Middle East Medal (four stars). Purple Heart box with medal and pins, box with two star medals and purple heart medal. 5) Tan dress shirt, with "Officer's/ARMY/Shirt" label with tan/gray necktie. 6) Field jacket, tan construction with the 2nd Armored patch on the shoulder and no maker's marks. 7) Field jacket, olive-drab green construction with brown plastic buttons, 2nd Armored shoulder patch and nickel finished Captain bars. A repeating "L-7971" ink stamp is present on the lining, with some faded hand-added blue ink markings as well.

Rating Definition:

1) Good, showing typical wear and tear overall, with a few detached sections of the inner webbing and cracking of the leather. 2) Very good. The liner chinstrap is damaged, and some rust and pitting is present inside the shell. 3) Very good, with some mild staining. 4) Very good, with light handling marks. The presence of the post-WWII Infantry Cord is unexplained by consignor notes; many WWII officers served in Korea, and it may have been among the items in Hundley's estate. 5) Good, showing staining and handling marks appropriate to wear and use. 6) Fair, showing the evidence of heavy field use, with fraying of the cuffs and staining overall. 7) Very good, with mild stains and wear.
