Description:

Desirable pre-WWII Springfield Model 1903A1 rifle that is equipped with Unertl 8X "USMC SNIPER" telescopic sight. This is a fine example of a collector assembled WWII USMC M1903A1 sniper rifle. The rifle has a very late production, Springfield M1903A1 receiver that was produced in late 1939, that has been fitted with a "SA/3-38" dated barrel with star-gauge mark on the muzzle but no star gauge number on top of the barrel ahead of the receiver. The rear section of the barrel does have the typical wrench marks, from when the barrel was installed. The rifle has a pistol grip "C" stock with "SA/SPG" final inspection mark on the left wrist, encircled block "P' proofmark behind the trigger guard and drawing number "D1836" in front of the lower sling swivel. The stock has been correctly restamped with the rifle serial number, (1532150) in front of the lower sling swivel. The right side of the rear sight base and course-checkered buttplate trap are marked with the correct SA drawing numbers. The rifle has a unnumbered, parkerized, "NS" marked bolt typically as used on a 1903A1 service rifle. The safety and magazine cut-off have the late block markings with polished bright face on the cuttoff. The telescopic sight has a blued scope tube marked: "J. UNERTL/USMC-SNIPER", and it is fitted with a fine wire cross-hair reticle with no center dot, and the black anodized J. Unertl telescopic sight mounts appear to be original. It is fitted with a newly, remachined, WWII style replacement handguard with the flat cuttout for the front scope block. The receiver does not have the typical USMC modifications. The rear telescopic sight base is mounted next to the rear sight base, however it is a early commercial Unertl type base and not a USMC type scope base and the front sight base is held in with allen-head type screws. It is fitted with a standard blade front sight and a earlier tangent rear sight with a bright polished face. It is fitted with a late style, flat face windage knob with an earlier dished elevation knob. It comes with a WWII parkerized front sight cover and an original WWI leather sling that is stamped with "GSO/WTC".

Rating Definition:

Very fine as assembled with 95% of the parkerized finish overall with edge and high spot wear, with some cycling wear on the bolt body with the inside receiver rails having been polished. The stock is in good condition with minor handling marks overall with a clear distinct cartouche and firing proof, however it has a repaired duffle bag cut under the middle barrel band and is just a stitch shorter than normal. The scope is in very fine condition with 95% of the blue finish overall with nice clear markings. The optics are clear however a little hazy or maybe out of focus. It’s a nice representative example of a WWII USMC sniper rifle.
