Description:

Patented in 1882 by John Dickson II and Andrew Graham Murray, the triple barrel Dickson & Son shotgun was produced in very limited quantities, possibly less than 30 total, with three 16 gauge barrels, a side lever and a round action. The middle barrel has a bead front sight. The right rib is marked "JOHN DICKSON & SON" followed by "PATENT", and the left rib is marked "63 PRINCES STREET EDINBURGH". The breech end of each rib is engraved with a small wedge of fine scroll. All three chokes measure cylinder, and it has 2 1/2 inch chambers and a one-piece extractor. The underside of the middle barrel and the top of the frame water table are marked "DICKSON & MURRAY'S/PATENT No.1", with London proofs and "17" on the underside of the chambers, and "JD&S" markings on both water tables. The action is nearly covered in fine scroll engraving, with a set of three golden cocking indicator pins, side mounted barrel lever, automatic safety with gold "SAFE" panel, and a three trigger arrangement with the front 2 triggers spring loaded to reduce the risk of injury from recoil. Fitted with a checkered straight wrist stock, with engraved casehardened fittings, a gold inscription oval on the underside, and a checkered horn buttplate. Measurements: bore diameter at 9 inches - 0.663, wall thickness at 9 inches - 0.056 (all three), length of pull - 14 1/2 inches, drop at comb - 1 1/2 inches, drop at heel - 2 1/4 inches, cast - off 1/4 inch, toe - out 3/4 inch, overall weight - 7 pounds 8 ounces. Included with the shotgun is a brass reinforced leather covered travel case configured for a pair of 16 gauge triple barrel Dickson shotguns, with a green felt interior, six nickel plated snap caps, an oiler, three screwdrivers, and a wooden cleaning rod.

Rating Definition:

Fine as period refurbished. The barrels show 95% plus brown Damascus finish, with strong welding patterns, bright edge wear and a few light handling marks, and the frame shows a well aged silver and gray patina overall, with a few dings on the recoil shields and traces of original color around the trigger guard. The trigger guard and break lever show over half of the blue, with a gray patina on the high points. The stock is very good, with mild dings and dents, a few flat spots in the checkering and fine wood grain and color. The case is very good, with mild wear. Mechanically excellent.
