Description:

The carbine has the short wrist stock with compartment for cleaning rod and ruptured cartridge extractor, buttplate with trap, low arch breechblock, M1879 buckhorn rear sight and barrel band with no provision for sling swivel. The carbine has a blued barrel, barrel band, trigger guard, lock, hammer and buttplate. The breechblock and barrel tang are color casehardened with vivid colors. The stock is oil-finished black walnut. The lock is marked with the eagle and shield device forward of the hammer followed by "U.S./SPRINGFIELD" in two lines. The serial number "141684" is located on the rear of the receiver. The breech block is marked "U.S./MODEL/1873" in three lines. "V/P/eagle head/P" proof and inspection marks are stamped on the left side of the barrel just ahead of the receiver. The left side of the rear sight base and leaf are marked "C" (carbine). The left side of the stock wrist is stamped with the script initials "SWP" over "1881" within a rectangle. A small sub-inspector's "X" mark is stamped directly behind the trigger guard. The stock is not stamped with the usual encircled script "P" proofmark which indicates that the stock is a field replacement.

Rating Definition:

Very fine. The carbine retains 90% plus of the original blue finish. Most of the finish wear is on the high points of the receiver and buttplate. The breechblock and tang have nearly all of the vivid case colors. The stock is in excellent condition with only scattered light storage marks. The 'SWP/1881" stamp is very sharp as it is a professional restamp. A high quality example of a classic Indian War cavalry carbine.
