Description:

This is an example of a U.S. Springfield Model 1879 Carbine with star-prefix serial number. It has been concluded that the star-prefixed carbines were refurbished and reissued carbines with replacement receivers that were refurbished by Springfield Armory. The lock plate has the eagle/shield motif with "U.S./SPRINGFIELD/1873", and the breechblock is marked "U.S./MODEL/1873." Hammer with three notch tumbler, "C" marked rear sight graduated to 1,500 yards with base graduated "1-8" and "V/P/Eagle Head/P" proof and inspection marks on left side of barrel. Stock with saddle bar with ring, "US" marked buttplate tang, "SWP/1882" script wrist cartouche and circled "P" on the underside of the wrist.

Rating Definition:

Very good. The barrel has a smooth brown patina. The barrel band retains an area of original blue finish, otherwise a mottled bright appearance. The lock plate, hammer, and trigger guard retain 30% faded original blue finish. The breechblock and receiver retain traces of faded original case colors. The stock is very good with a sharp cartouche, long hairline crack near the lock, a couple of gouges and some minor pressure dents and scratches. Mechanically excellent.
