Description:

This rifle is one of just 1,001 Model 1880 rifles manufactured around 1880 in the 154000-158000 serial number range for U.S. military trials. It is the first U.S. rifle to utilize the much maligned ramrod bayonet. Similar ramrod bayonets were used on other experimental models, the production Model 1888, and even early Model 1903 bolt action rifles. The use on the latter prompted Theodore Roosevelt to state, "I must say that I think that ramrod bayonet is about as poor an invention as I ever saw." This example also has a clip on front sight cover, standard blade front and combination notch and folding ladder rear sights, a leather sling, and standard markings. The stock has an "SWP/1887" cartouche indicating it is a replacement.

Rating Definition:

Very good. The rifle has faded original finished and a blend of gray and brown patina. There are a number of dings and marks throughout on the reoiled wood and metal, and some light oxidation. The action functions fine, and most of the markings are crisp. The sling is very good and has mild storage wear.
