Description:

Measuring 37 3/8 inches overall, this sword is fitted with a curved 32 3/4 inch single fuller blade, decorated on the lower two thirds with a rich niter blue field and gold wash accented wire etching, which includes scroll patterns, martial and patriotic motifs, and the "A.W. SPIES/ WARRANTED" marking on the right side immediately above the beaded languet. The hilt is gold washed brass, with deeply sculpted bead, floral and laurel wreath motifs overall, a stirrup-pattern guard, dove's head pommel and a carved bone grip. The scabbard is gilt brass, with engraved laurel patterns around the suspension bands and at the tip, a "screaming eagle" design between the bands, an American shield surrounded with leaves and flowers below the bands, and a single length of box weave suspension chain.

Rating Definition:

Very fine. The blade shows some light spotting and handling marks, with strong niter blue and solid etching and gold wash. The hilt is good, with some cracks and chips of the grip, antique brass visible on the high edges and mild handling marks, and the scabbard is in similar condition.
