Description:

The Blake Repeating Rifle was manufactured by J.H. Blake, New York, in the 1890s to around 1910 in an unknown but limited quantity after failing to secure government contracts due to the adoption of the Krag bolt action rifles and carbines. It was designed with a unique seven round rotary magazine which is inserted from the bottom of the receiver. The bottom of the receiver has a hinged door which allows access to the magazine. The left side of the receiver has a lever that allows the weapon to be used in single shot style until the reserve ammunition is needed. It has a dovetailed blade front sight, an adjustable peep sight on the bolt, checkered forearm and pistol grip stock with smooth hard rubber buttplate, and is inscribed with "MADE BY/JOHN HENRY BLAKE/1897/PATENTS ALLOWED/BLAKE 40-40S-245" and a circled buffalo head on the bottom of the loading door.

Rating Definition:

Fine. The original blue finish on the barrel and upper receiver have faded to an even plum brown. The German silver has some verdigris and aged patina. There is some light spotting scattered throughout, including on the bright finished bolt and bolt handle. The wood is fine as repaired on right side beneath bolt handle and refinished in that area. The buttplate is aged and has moderate wear. The bolt cycles fine, and the inscription and engraved buffalo head are crisp.
