Description:

This is a scarce example of one of the 1,000 experimental Model 1886 carbines manufactured by Springfield Armory for cavalry troop trials and falls within the correct 325000-400000 serial number range. Features a 24 inch barrel and nearly full length walnut stock, which is fitted with a sling swivel near the butt and carbine sling bar and ring. The upper barrel band has a curved sling swivel that was only used on this model designed to fit closely against the stock when the carbine is placed in a saddle boot. The buttplate has a trap for a three-piece cleaning rod and ruptured case extractor (not included). Special Buffington rear sight calibrated to 2,000 yards and marked "XC" on the right side of the leaf. The front sight has the experimental hood used on the Model 1884 ramrod bayonet rifles. The lock plate is marked with the eagle and shield motif in front of the hammer and "U.S./SPRINGFIELD" in two-lines. The top of the low arch breechblock is marked "U.S./Model/1873." The left side of the barrel is stamped with "V/P/eagle head" proof and inspection marks, and two additional small stamps are at the junction with the receiver. No cartouche is visible on the stock, and a "4" stamped brass tag is near the toe.

Rating Definition:

Fine. The barrel has 50% original blue finish on the exposed areas, honest brown patina, and strong original blue in the protected areas. The breech has dark mottled gray and brown patina while the refinished breechblock has vibrant case colors. The lock has 80% dark oil-quenched case colors. There is 90% original blue finish on the trigger guard and parts of the buttplate. The re-oiled stock has some minor dings and marks throughout. The lock functions fine, and the markings are crisp.
