Description:

The included factory letter confirms the carbine configuration, .40-82 caliber, sight for smokeless, and shotgun buttplate. The carbine was received in the warehouse on April 13, 1903 and shipped on August 5, 1903, order number 195085. The carbine is chambered for the rarely encountered .40-82 caliber, which was introduced in 1885 for the Winchester single shot and also available for the Model 1886. The caliber was favored by elk and heavy game hunters but despite its popularity, rifles in this caliber are rarely encountered. Most of the original .40-82 Winchester single shot and 1886 rifles have been rebarreled for modern calibers. This Model 1886 rifle retains its original .40-82 caliber barrel as confirmed by the factory letter. The .40-82 cartridge was phased out by 1935. A pinned blade front sight is mounted ahead of the front magazine band, and the ladder rear sight is graduated from 0-20. The top of the barrel is marked with the two line address ahead of the rear sight and "40-82/W.C.F." at the breech. The left side of the receiver has a saddle ring stud with ring. The upper tang is marked with the three-line model/trademark information, and the lower tang has the two-line patent dates marking and serial number. Mounted on a smooth forearm and straight grip stock fitted with a special order checkered hard rubber shotgun buttplate featuring the embossed factory logo.

Rating Definition:

Very fine. The carbine retains 80% plus original blue finish thinning to a brown. 40% of the original case colors remain on the hammer and lever. A section of hard rubber (which is included) has detached from the buttplate. The wood is fine with a minor crack on the forearm (underside) and some minor handling marks. Mechanically excellent. This is a very desirable Winchester Carbine in 40.82 caliber.
