Description:

Manufactured in 1885. The top of the barrel is marked with the one-line address, and the left side of the frame is marked with the three-line, three-patent dates followed by "U.S." There are small "D.F.C." sub-inspection stamps located on the underside of the barrel, the bottom of the frame and the side of the cylinder. A "P" proofmark is stamped on the underside of the barrel in front of the sub-inspection mark and on the side of the cylinder. Colt "O", "G" and "J" inspection marks are stamped on the underside of the barrel behind the ejector housing stud. Colt "S" inspection mark is stamped on the rear face of the cylinder. "G" is stamped in the hammer well above the firing pin hole. The complete matching serial number is marked on the bottom of the frame, trigger guard and back strap, and the partial serial number "5058" is on the underside of the barrel and on the cylinder. The loading gate is marked with the assembly number "439". The frame and hammer are casehardened, and the remaining parts are blue. Later oval style ejector rod head. Fitted with a smooth one-piece walnut grip with "1885" over a "JBG" cartouche on the left side and a boxed "D.F.C." on the right side. There are two factory letters, one dated December 17, 1969, and the other February 21, 2011. Both verify the caliber, blue finish with grips and barrel length "Not Listed". Both state the revolver was 1 of 150 shipped to the U.S. Government inspector at the Colt plant with the 2011 letter stating shipment was on November 12, 1885, and the 1969 letter November 12, 1889. (Writer believes the 1969 letter is a misprint/typo on the year of shipment.) The 2011 letter also has remarks that 7 1/2 inch barrels and walnut grips were considered standard during that time period. The 2011 letter also states that a second listing for this serial number indicates this was a 44/40 caliber with 4 3/4 inch barrel, blue finish and rubber stocks that was in a shipment of 5 to Hartley and Graham in New York on April 6, 1886. This entry may be the result of a transposed number when checking the serial number. There is also a "Colt Antique Pistol Data Sheet" with no origin.

Rating Definition:

Very good plus. The barrel and trigger guard show 40% original blue finish in protected areas with a dark and mottled gray patina on the balance. The grip straps show some minor spotting. There is some minor pitting on the muzzle end of the barrel and a few minor dents on the cylinder. The frame has patterns of case colors, but is mostly a smooth mottled silver/gray patina. The grip is very good with a chip on each toe, minor dents on the bottom, a number of minor gouges and chips on the left side and some wear on the lower edges. The cartouches are legible. The markings are clear. The action is excellent.
