Description:

This is a fine example of a, U.S. contract, Colt Single Action Cavalry Model revolver that was manufactured in 1890. The revolver has the Colt military blue finish on the barrel, ejector housing, cylinder, trigger guard and back strap. The frame, hammer and loading gate are color casehardened. The one-piece walnut grip is oil finished. The ejector rod has the late pattern, oval ejector rod head. The hammer has bordered knurling on the spur. The top of the barrel is roll-stamped with the Style IV (elongated block letter) barrel address: "COLT'S PT. F.A. MFG. Co. HARTFORD CT. U.S.A." The bottom of the barrel is stamped with a small "P" proof mark and a small "R.A.C." sub-inspection mark. The left side of the frame is roll-stamped with the Colt three-date/three-line patent markings followed by the "U.S." property mark. The cylinder is stamped with a "R.A.C." sub-inspection mark and a "P" proofmark. "R.A.C." sub-inspection marks are stamped on the bottom of the frame above the serial number and on the bottom of the left grip heel. Colt "K" inspection marks are stamped on the trigger guard and bottom of the back strap. The assembly number "910" is stamped on the inside of the loading gate. The full serial number "132485" is stamped on the bottom of the frame, trigger guard and back strap. The partial serial number "2485" is stamped on the underside of the barrel beneath the ejector housing and on the side of the cylinder. All of the visible serial numbers match. The lower left side of the grip is stamped with the date "1890" above the script initials "SEB" (Ordnance Inspector Capt. Stanhope E. Blunt) surrounded by a rectangle with rounded ends. The lower right side of the grip is stamped with the Ordnance sub-inspection mark which consists of the script initials "RAC" surrounded by a rectangle.

Rating Definition:

Fine. This revolver is all original and retains 50% plus of the original blue and color casehardened finish. The barrel retains most of the military blue finish with the polishing marks still visible on either side of the front sight blade. Wear is limited to some scattered handling marks, some thinning on the left side of the barrel and some edge wear on the muzzle. The Colt address is crisp, and the serial number, proof and sub-inspection marks on the underside of the barrel are sharp. Most of the blue finish is present on the ejector housing. The blue finish on the cylinder has faded to a smooth gray-brown patina. The cylinder markings are sharp. The back strap and grip strap show handling wear; the blue finish is thin and fading to a gray patina. Considerable amounts of blue finish are present on protected areas of the trigger guard and back strap. The frame and hammer retain more than 70% of the casehardened finish with silvering case colors on contact points. The loading gate has a silver patina. Most of the fire blue finish is present on the screws and trigger. The walnut grip is in very good condition with crisp date, final inspection and sub-inspection stamps. Wear is limited to a few insignificant handling marks on the sides of the grip and a number of shallow dents and scratches on the butt. The action is tight and functions perfectly. This is a fine example of a late production, "R.A.C." sub-inspected Colt Single Action Cavalry Model revolver. ,
