Description:

According to Sharps expert Frank Sellers, only 550 of these rifles were manufactured in 1857 to 1860. The first 50 were experimental. They are essentially the same as the Sharps falling block percussion pistols but have modified actions, rifle length barrels, forearms, and stocks. Marked "C. SHARPS & CO'S PHILA. PA." on the left side of the action. The serial number is found on the breechblock. Fitted with a German blade front sight and notch rear sight with a dovetail slot positioned ahead of the rear sight. Smooth forearm with a silver plated forend cap and pistol grip stock with a iron grip cap, silver plated patch box and crescent buttplate. Little is actually known about these rifles, but they are very hard to find, especially in decent condition. Several were modified to pistols, and many others were undoubtedly destroyed.

Rating Definition:

Very good. The pistol rifle has a smooth dark patina with a mottled patina on the buttplate. The silver has darkened with age. The refinished wood is good with a repaired grip area, a small hairline crack on the forearm (left side) and a number of minor pressure dents and scratches.
