Description:

Manufactured from 1876 to 1891. This rifle has the distinctive features of the No. 5 Pacific Rifle include a ramrod mounted under the barrel, double set triggers and a ring shaped lever. The lever has a smooth wood insert. Fitted with a globe front sight and a tang mounted peep sight. A filler block is in the rear barrel sight dovetail. The left side of the receiver is marked "MARLIN FIREARMS CO. NEW HAVEN CT. U.S.A./BALLARD'S. PATENT. NOV. 5, 1861," with the serial number marked on the underside of the receiver. The barrel is marked "40-85" at the breech. It has a blued barrel with remaining parts casehardened and mounted with a smooth walnut forearm and straight grip stock with a crescent buttplate ("DWJ" stamped on heel). Includes a wooden ramrod.

Rating Definition:

Very good. The barrel retains 70% thinning original blue finish with high edge wear. The remaining bright polished metal surfaces have a smooth gray patina. The refinished wood is also very good with a repair on the buttstock near the frame and some minor handling marks. The wood cap on lever has had the wood chipped out. Mechanically fine.
