Stock: ebony

Description:

This lot consists of a cased pair of French marked highly embellished percussion pistols. The top barrel flat is marked "ACIER FONDU," French for "cast steel." The mid-section of the rifled octagon barrel is fluted. The pistol is fitted with a blade front sight and notch rear sight. The lock plate, hammer, barrel tang, breech plug, trigger guard and grip cap have an exquisite chiseled floral scroll motif engraving with damascened gold in the negative spaces. A fine example of period decorative arts craftsmanship. A gold inlaid "1" appears on the barrel tang and breech plug. The beautifully shaped trigger guard is marked with the number "100" on the inside. The ebony half stock has a fine high relief floral carving that compliments the engraving. The carving appears on the forearm and grip. Additionally the grip has deep flutes. The single barrel wedge is engraved. The barrel sports a high polished blue finish with the remaining surfaces left in the white. The case has a leather Lisbon, Portugal, retailer label on the inside of the purple velvet lined lid. The label reads, "IMBERTON FILHO/ESPINGARDEIRO LA CAZA REAL/Rua Aurea n 256/LISBOA." The case is lined in purple velvet. The case carries both pistols and several accessories. The accessories include a cap container, cleaning rod, ramrod, oiler, powder flask, nipple wrench, screwdriver and unidentified tool. Other accessories include a bullet mold, lead balls, case key and silver ladle.

Rating Definition:

Very fine. The barrel retains 80% refinished blue finish with a smooth brown patina on the balance. The remaining metal surfaces retain a bright left in the white appearance. The stock is also very fine showing a few minor handling marks. Mechanically needs work as hammer does not hold at the full cock position. The refinished case is good with the hinges missing screws (lid detached), minor crack and some missing trim on the lid and some minor high spot wear on the lining.
