Description:

This pair of pistols was manufactured by one of several of the Smith gunmakers in England in the early 19th century. The pistols were likely designed for use as traveler's pistols but would have also been suitable for use as holster pistols by an English officer. They have Birmingham proofmarks on the underside of the barrels and are marked "SMITH LONDON" on the top flats. The barrels also have small post front sights and are fastened via hooked breeches and single barrel wedges. The underside of the muzzle is fitted with a swivel that retains the iron ramrods. The locks and trigger guards have English scrollwork and engraved accents. The locks are both marked "SMITH" and have sliding safeties, rollers on the frizzen springs, and semi-waterproof pans. The stocks are checkered at the grip and have silver thumb plates.

Rating Definition:

Very good. Damascus patterns are faint on the visible surfaces of the barrel, but the underside has more distinct patterns. The lock and most of the fittings display a dark brown patina. There is some mild oxidation and pitting, especially on the barrel near the vent. The thumb plate has a very dark patina. The stock is also very good and displays scattered dings and has a crack in the ramrod channel. The lock functions very well and has crisp markings.

Rating Definition:

Very good. Small amounts of original blue finish remain on the trigger guard. The barrel has traces of original Damascus patterns visible and mottled gray-brown patina. The lock has a dark brown appearance. There are some patches of mostly mild oxidation and pitting. The silver thumb piece displays a deep aged patina. The stock is also very good. It has crisp checkering, light scratches, a tension crack at the lock screw, and filled repairs visible near the barrel tang, front left of the forend, and at the tail of the lock. The lock has crisp engraving and markings and functions fine.
