Description:

Robert Wogdon of London was active from 1760 until 1803 and died in 1813. He is best known as a maker of duelling pistols and was the gunsmith who crafted the pistols used in the most famous duel in American history: the Burr-Hamilton duel that ended with Alexander Hamilton mortally wounded and ultimately destroyed Aaron Burr's political career. The barrel is Damascus pattern and has "Wodgon London" signed on top, border engraving at the breech, a "crown/GP" proofmark and Wodgon's "RW" hallmark on the bottom, a gold lined vent, a swamped profile, and is fastened by two wedges and a hooked breech plug. The trigger guard, ramrod ferrules, and buttcap are silver with floral engraving. It has a gold lined flash pan and a wooden ramrod with long iron front tip.

Rating Definition:

Fair. Nearly all of the gold in the pan and vent liners remain. The refinished barrel has Damascus style swirl patterns and more than half of the artificial brown finish. The lock is a dark plum brown. The silver has a dark aged patina. The revarnished stock is also fair and has light scratches and small pressure marks. The lock and set trigger function excellently. This is a very attractive pistol manufactured by an important duelling pistol maker.
