Description:

This is a WWII production K98 sniper rifle manufactured by the Gustloff factory. The rifle has the typical late war light silver/gray type finish with the stamped and unnumbered components with a milled floorplate. The floorplate is stamped with a single "eagle/1" proofmark and the unnumbered trigger guard is stamped with a "qnw" Waffenamt proof indicating it was a subcontractor proof. The rear portion of the barrel is marked with the rifle serial number 75818 with a double "eagle/firing proof"; however, no visible barrel maker's code next to an "eagle/13" proof. The receiver ring is stamped with an "eagle/749" over "bcd/45" the wartime code for the Gustloff-Werkes. It has a standard K98 bolt with a single number "1" on the underside with 5818 stamped on top of the bolt handle. The bolt is fitted with a rough cast extended safety stamped "18" on the flat. The barrel is fitted with the standard "v" front sight with a standard K98 tangent rear sight graduated to 2,000 meters. It is fitted with the wartime laminated stock and handguard, with the right having a partial "eagle/H" proof below the stock washer. It is fitted with a smooth replacement steel buttplate. The scope base as noted has corresponding three screws, with locking screws, and two taper pins. The base has a very small partial "eagle/359" proof. It has a blued long side rail type scope mount, with the stamped spring steel scope bands. The mount is numbered 57734 (non-matching) on the front end and has a partial unreadable Waffenampt proof on the side. It comes with a blued scope marked "DIALYTAN/4x/78003/bek", with the standard elevation adjustment dial on top. The rifle comes with a blued cleaning rod, front sight cover, winter trigger, and now includes a matching metal scope case with jvb proof and smooth leather sling.

Rating Definition:

Very fine with 90% plus of the original phosphate finish overall with edge and high spot wear, with the balance of the metal a silver patina finish, thinning on the exposed barrel area. The barrel bands and trigger guard retain 90% of their finish and the floorplate has faded to a silver patina finish. The stock and handguard are both in very fine condition with a nice darker color overall with handling marks and scratches on the sides from use and carrying, with the very rear edges of the buttstock (in front of the buttplate) showing minor separations of the laminated wood. The buttplate has browned out and shows areas of corrosion around the edges. The scope and mount retain 90% of their blue finish overall with edge and high spot wear. The optics are clear, but very hazy. This scope case retains 80% plus finish, with flaking around the edges and stamps. At some point someone removed/reattached the three base and lock screws on the scope base and has buggered all the screw slots.
