Description:

This is an extremely rare example of an early experimental Walther Mod. M.P. double action 9 mm parabellum semi-automatic pistol that has the "concealed hammer" design. This pistol was essentially a scaled up version of the original Walther's Mod. PP utilizing the same blowback locking mechanism, only chambered for the 9 mm parabellum cartridge. It is estimated that these were produced in the early 1930s prior to the M.P. ring hammer and later AP pistol designs. The known serial number range of this type of Walther M.P. pistols is from 5001-5010, with serial numbers 5004 and 5009 documented in several Walther reference books. This example which was unknown is actually the first pistol produced in this series and is correctly numbered "5001", and is the only known "concealed hammer" Walther M.P. semi-automatic pistol known! This series of pistol is discussed and illustrated on pages 29 and 30 of "THE P.38 PISTOL, VOLUME ONE" by Warren Buxton. The pistol has the same general configuration as the Mod. PP only with a 5 inch barrel and of course chambered in "9mm Luger" as noted. The pistol features a 90 degree safety lever and a push button magazine release on the left side of the frame. The top of the slide has a milled sighting rib with fixed front and drift adjustable rear sights. The butt of the pistol is fitted with a military style lanyard loop. It comes with one original blued and unmarked eight-round magazine. The left side of the slide bears the Walther Banner followed by the two line factory legend of: "Waffenfabrik Walther, Zella-Mehlis (Thur)/Walther's Patent Cal. 9 m/m", followed by "Mod. M.P." The serial number (5001) is marked vertically on the right side of the frame behind the trigger. The right side of the slide, chamber area and muzzle are on the barrel are all stamped with the standard "crown/N" commercial proofmark. All components have a high polish, commercial blue finish.

Rating Definition:

Very fine with 85% plus of the original blue finish with scattered minor oxidation along the transition lines on the sides of the slide. The front and rear grip strap also show some minor blue loss mixed with some scattered browning and light oxidation. The checkered walnut grips are in fine condition with nice, distinct, original checkering on both sides, showing light wear across the tops of the checkering. This is a truly rare and unique Walther Model M.P. experimental concealed hammer semi-automatic pistol in 9 mm Luger.
