Description:

This is a very fine example of an early production Mauser Model 1896 six-shot, large ring, bolo frame pistol that has the very desirable "Von Lengerke & Detmold" frame markings. This pistol also has the grip strap slot for a stock, which was eliminated very early in the production of this model, making this a very rare example. The chamber area is marked "WAFFENFABRIK, MAUSER OBERNDORF, A/N". It has the shallow milled frame panels with the right rear side marked: "WAFFENFABRIK MAUSER OBERNDORF A.Neckar", with the left center frame panel marked in three lines: "VON LENGERKE/& DETMOLD/NEW YORK". The left rear panel is additionally marked: "LOH," and the right lower side of the magazine well has been lightly engraved: "Louis O. Henssler". The left side of the chamber is stamped with a double "crown/U" proofmark along with the serial number. The right side of the chamber area is blank. As noted, it has the short bolo style frame and barrel with the barrel banded front sight. The upper rear area of the barrel extension, normally fitted with an adjustable rear sight has been milled flat and was factory fitted with a fixed rear sight. The bolo style frame is fitted with a set of matching Mauser hard rubber grips with the vine and floral patterns that are numbered "29606" on the back side of each grip. The underside of the pistol frame is fitted with lanyard ring stud and ring. As noted, this desirable Mauser pistol also comes with an original Mauser combination walnut shoulder stock/holster. The hinge plate on the left side has also been period marked with the stylized "LOH" initials that match the pistol. It has an attaching iron that is numbered "40514". These six-shot Broomhandle pistols have the best feel and balance of all the 1896 pistols and with these very desirable features make them a scarce pistol.

Rating Definition:

Very fine with 90% of the blue finish overall with only minor edge and high spot wear overall with thinning and brown on the grip straps. The grips are in very fine condition with nice distinct detail, showing only light wear across the tops of the grips. All the visible numbers match on this pistol. The shoulder stock/holster is in very good condition having been lightly revarnished overall, but has not sanded. As noted ,the stock has a non-matching attaching iron. A unique example of a scarce six-shot, large ring, bolo frame Model 1896 Mauser pistol.
