Description:

This is a very fine example of a very desirable late production Mauser Model 1896 large ring, flat side broomhandle pistol that has the desirable Von Lengerke & Detmold marked frame panel. Von Lengerke & Detmold was one of the earliest importer and sporting goods stores in New York City and eventually became one of the major importers of German Mauser and Luger pistols prior to WWI. It was established in 1882 and was eventually sold in 1928 to Abercrombie and Fitch. The chamber area has the standard three-line Mauser factory markings with the serial number (27296) stamped on the left flat, and it has the early features such as the large ring hammer, flat side frame, long extractor, and the new style breechblock with the round single lug firing pin without the dovetailed retainer block. The left side of the barrel extension is stamped with the "double crown/U" Mauser proofmark with a single Mauser antler firing/acceptance proof on the right side. The left side of the frame is prominently stamped: "VON LENGERKE/& DETMOLD/NEW-YORK". It has the standard inverted "v" front sight and the adjustable tangent rear sight graduated from "50-1000" meters. Matching numbers are present on the barrel, follower, bolt, large ring hammer, hammer housing and frame, the floor plate is numbered 520. It has the standard 23 groove walnut grips, and the butt of the frame is fitted with a lanyard ring stud and an original lanyard ring.

Rating Definition:

Excellent with 90% plus of the original blue finish overall with almost all of the wear on the rear grip strap where it shows much blue loss and small nicks and dings where a shoulder stock was attached and removed. The trigger retains 50% of its straw colors and the other smaller parts retain 90% of their heat blue finish. The grips are in very fine condition with only a couple minor handling marks. A very nice looking, late production large ring, flat side Mauser Broomhandle pistol.
