Description:

There is no signature on the barrel, but the lock is marked "T/ADAMS" and has light engraving. A very similar rifle with nearly identical patch box and side plates (only difference is the engraving) is signed "H. Slocomb" and stamped "W. Adams" on the barrel. Its lock design is very similar as well but is not stamped. Another very similar rifle is pictured and discussed on pages 168-169 of "Kentucky Rifles and Pistols, 1750-1850" and is listed as a New England rifle signed by Lemuel Leland of Sherbourne, Mass, in 1848-1860. The rifle has a small blade front sight, notch rear sight, single "pig tail" trigger, sparse engraving, and smooth cherry stock with brass fittings, including the wedge escutcheons and a thumb plate, and some silver wire inlay at breech and upper wrist, and a cheekpiece on the left.

Rating Definition:

Fair as reconverted to flintlock configuration. The barrel and lock have dark patina and minor pitting. The barrel was shortened from the muzzle end. The brass has an aged patina and fine engraving. The lengthened stock is fair with some repairs on the butt and wrist, a few chips around the lock, only a portion of the original silver wire inlay, and general light scratches. A modern screw enters from the bottom of the wrist and goes up to the brass thumbplate. The lock is functional.
