Description:

This rifle is partially modern with antique parts and unsigned. It has been fitted with an engraved lock marked "R/ASHMORE/WARRANTED." The lock has a semi-waterproof pan and a roller on the frizzen spring. Richard Ashmore was a lock maker in Wednesbury, Straffordshire Co., England, active around 1827-1855 under his own name and possibly in a partnership at the beginning of the century. The stock has six silver escutcheons, silver thumb plate and half moon cheekpiece inlay, a patch box similar to those seen on some Jacob Earnest rifles, comb plate, wear plate on the forend, cheekpiece edge plate, and a panel on the left side of the butt to conceal a mistake preceded by a medallion with a raised relief stag. The barrel has a beaded blade front sight, notch rear sight, and circle designs on the muzzle. The rifle is also equipped with double set triggers and has an extra long striped ramrod.

Rating Definition:

Good as converted back to flintlock configuration and carefully pieced around the lock and sections of the forend. The barrel and lock are mostly dark brown with some oxidation and pitting concentrated at the breech. The vent has a brass liner and is slightly forward of the center of the pan. Most of the brass and silver fitting have an aged patina. The middle silver inlay on the right has been replaced with German silver. Aside from the repairs the stock is fine and has beautiful striped figure, scattered light scratches and small marks, and some minor cracking and chipping on the left side of the forend.
