Description:

This rifle is signed "G.A." (George/Gideon Anstat/Anstadt?) on the barrel and "H S" (?) carved on either side of the forward moon inlay on the cheek rest. The forend has eight hunter star inlays. The wrist has a plain silver thumb plate, and the cheek rest has inlaid moons flaking an engraved eye inlay with bone/white horn sclera, brass iris, and black horn pupil. The silver eye lid has engraved eyelashes. Most of the brass furniture is also engraved with simple floral and scroll designs. The rifle has simple blade and notch sights like most "Kentucky" rifles, a brass wear plate, "LONDON/WARRANTED" imported lock with floral designs, double set triggers, a lightly engraved patch box with six piercings and a spire style finial (similar to those seen on some Berks Country and other Pennsylvania rifles), and has a intensely flame figured maple stock with scroll carving on the left side. The butt profile is slightly "Roman Nose."

Rating Definition:

Very good. There are some brown touch ups visible on the barrel near the breech, the brass has been cleaned, and the stock has been refreshed. Given the proximity of the forend cap to the front pair of inlays and the way it fits, the barrel and stock may have been shortened. The barrel and lock display mostly even, dark brown patina while the brass is mostly bright. There is heavy flash pitting at the breech. The silver has a natural aged patina. The stock has outstanding figure, several faint hairline cracks and subtle professional repairs on the forend including thin strips along the edges on the front section, and crisp carving. The lock functions fine.
