Description:

One of the more storied variants of the stahlhelm, the Fallschirmjaeger helmet was the result of German experiments with airborne soldiers, where the broad neck protection of the standard stahlhelm put notable stress on the necks of paratroopers when the wind caught it during a jump. Along with the jump smock, these helmets would become one of the signature pieces of Fallschirmjaeger gear. Originally manufactured with a very deep blue paint finish, the helmet has been oversprayed, first in green and then in tan, both times with masking applied to protect the Luftwaffe decal on the left side. This style of camouflage, typically applied by unit armorers using supplies of spray-paint intended for finishing vehicles in the field, is well documented with the Luftwaffe, with the green color associated with operations in the European Theater and the tan with African operations. The interior is stamped "ET 68" on the left side and "458" on the right, with a blue-green leather chinstrap secured with "spanner" style bolts, and brown leather webbing size marked "68" and "57" and bearing a faint maker's mark towards the rear.

Rating Definition:

Very fine. The helmet retains 75% of the original tan camouflage, with loss along the top and near the edge of the skirt showing the underlying green camouflage, factory deep blue and the steel, with some mild scuffs and scratches as well. Over 80% of the Luftwaffe decal is present, with a bit of the wings scuffed off, and the masking a little off to the left during the tan paint application. The interior is fair, with some tearing of the webbing, light cracking of the chinstrap and mild sweat staining.
