Description:

This rifle is signed "A Daniels" on the top of the barrel and "A D" on the lock. Adam Daniels of Pennsylvania was active in Lancaster in the 1820s to 1840s per Sellers' "American Gunsmiths." This example is dated "1837" on the top of the buttplate. His rifles are high quality examples of post-"Golden Age" designs. They still retain some of the ornate elements and overall attractive design of the Golden Age but notably lack carving. The overall design matches other known or attributed Daniels rifles especially in the German silver inlays and patch box finial designs. Dovetailed German silver blade front sight, notch rear sight, double set triggers, full length walnut stock with Roman nose butt profile, 16 inlays, brass wear plate and remaining furniture, and is inscribed "No. 232" on the side plate.

Rating Definition:

Fair. The refinished barrel has a filled dovetail 1 1/2 inches from the breech and another round fill 1 1/4 inches further forward. The barrel was shortened by around 8 inches, and the sights and lock bolt are replacements. There is some recent brown touch ups, faded original brown finish, and brown patina on the barrel and lock. There is also some light oxidation, patches of minor pitting, and heavy flash pitting at the right flat around the bolster. The brass and German silver display aged patinas. The patch box door catch is detached but included. The refinished stock is good with a brass repair plate above the lock, cracks at the front wedge and ahead of the lock, and some minor dings and scratches. The lock and set triggers are functional, and the signatures and engraving patterns are crisp.
