Description:

This gun has the standard blade and notch sights found on most "Kentucky" rifles and is marked "A. HEATON" on the engraved lock plate, full length maple stock with Roman nose style butt, brass furniture, and engraving on the toe plate and the fairly narrow patch box. Little is known about Heaton, but the same marking has been found on other rifles. The rifle likely dates to the 1830s. The bore has been reamed smooth. It may have started life as a rifle and later been re-bored after the rifling became worn. These rifle sighted smoothbores could be practically as accurate as a rifle at short ranges and were more versatile since they could also be used with shot or buck and ball.

Rating Definition:

Very good. The barrel and lock have dark patina, mild spotting, some dings and marks, and light pitting. The vent is very large. The brass has aged patina throughout. The stock is fine and has some chips and repairs along the edges of the forend, minor scratches, a crack at the toe, and flash wear near the cock. The lock is functional and has clear markings.
